Washington Post on Oil Prices

The reliably liberal newspaper, Washington Post, did this piece on oil prices.

Tali, you referred to that reliably statist newspaper as "reliably liberal." But when the word "liberal" first began to be used to describe a political affiliation in the early 1800s, a "liberal" was one who supported free enterprise. That is still the meaning of "liberal" in Mexico, South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. That's most continents.

The word "liberal" refers to statism in the United States today precisely because American socialists successfully stole the word from us free-marketers -- the true liberals -- in the early 1900s.

"Liberal" means "lenient" and liberated, and that is exactly what the Big-Government welfare-statist program is not. Let us call the anti-business, regulation-obsessed ideology what it really is: illiberal (emphasis on the "ill" part).

And let us take back the word "liberal." It rightfully belongs to us.
